Demolition, asbestos removal works & reinforcement of existing concrete retaining wall using mechanical earth anchors – Circus Street Former Municipal Market and University of Brighton Annex, Brighton, East Sussex BN2 9QF

Dorton Demolition recently completed asbestos removal works, demolition, reinforcement of existing retaining wall, and general site clearance, as part of Brighton’s plans for a new Social, Cultural and Economic Quarter – regenerating the Circus Street area. The works involved the demolition, in Brighton’s City Centre, of former Brighton Municipal Market buildings, first floor Brighton & Hove City Council car park and Brighton & Hove Wood Recycling store and yard. All ground bearing floor slabs, foundations, basements and cellars were broken up, all suitable arisings crushed to 6F2. This was utilized to backfill excavations leaving a level site with remaining material stockpiled on site for use by the building contractor’s piling and groundworks teams. The demolition works were carried out in two phases. The first phase involved the demolition of all structures to ground slab level. The second phase included the reinforcement of existing concrete retaining wall using Platipus mechanical earth anchors, and breaking out all slabs and foundations. The works were exceptionally demanding in terms of liaison with neighbouring residents and users of surrounding accommodation and commercial properties throughout the works regarding issues such as noise, vibration, contractor parking, and alarms at night, security and dust. Dorton completed the works safely, on time and on budget and with minimum disturbance to the day-to-day operation of the surrounding commercial units and living standards of neighbouring residents.
