Asbestos Removal and Demolition

Dorton Group are currently carrying out the asbestos removal, demolition, excavation and remedial works, which include for temporary works and the installation of ground anchors at the former Circus Street Markets and University Building, Brighton.

The multi-million pound project is a joint enterprise between Brighton & Hove City Council and the Cathedral Group/U+I (Brighton) Ltd and is to be a flagship redevelopment providing Social, Cultural and Economic benefits to the community. The site, which has lain idle for many years, has been badly vandalised and was an eye sore so close to the city centre.

The asbestos removal amounted to approximately 70 tonnes of materials being taken out and disposed of to a licensed landfill site. Further asbestos will be removed from the 4 storey University building when it has been vacated. The asbestos cement sheets were taken off by hand and the cleared steel frame of the roof sheared down by demolition rig equipped with shear attachment. The mainly concrete walls along with the slabs and basement have been sheared with concrete shears and all resultant materials processed through an on site crushing unit. The basements have been fully excavated and infilled with clean inert crushed concrete ready for the incoming construction team to pile their foundations.

A major re-direction of utility supplies is currently underway to provide new supplies for the redevelopment and traffic management is in place to keep the area roads free from congestion.

Within the Dorton remit, daily vibration and noise monitoring was and is continuing to monitor the site operations with a view to controlling any environmental concerns for the residents located close to the site. Monthly resident meetings are attended by all stakeholders and weekly news sheets are produced for the residents benefit.

As the level of the site is below that of the adjacent residents block, ground anchors are to be installed to penetrate 7 metres into the soil through the retaining wall of the existing retained boundary of the market. All considerations have been given to applying best practice and environmental awareness regarding the receptors close to the site with a watching brief by the Brighton & Hove City Environmental Health Department as well as the Highways to monitor the areas traffic problems.

Dorton Group are 12 weeks into the £1M circa project with approximately 12 more weeks to completion.

Thank you so much for 'brokering' an appointment for me with your Site Manager. I attached a picture taken from my flat across the street, which rather display why I am so captivated by the operation. Steve was very courteous & patient with his explanations. Your Team on site are great ambassadors for your business. The eventual rebuild will be far less interesting. With every good wish.
